1959 VW Camper van ‘Holy Grail’ for auction at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre

A super rare 1959 Volkswagen 23 Window Samba Campervan, is set to bring Camper fans flocking to the West Midlands when it goes to auction with Classic Car Auctions (CCA) at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre on Saturday 10th June.

The rare 23 window model, featuring eight small skylight windows and sunroof, is among the most sought-after of all VW Campers and is considered as the ‘Holy Grail’ among collectors and enthusiasts.

The right hand drive, manual example is believed to be one of just a handful on UK roads and today appears just as it did when it rolled out of the German factory in 1959 following a painstakingly detailed restoration.

Originally dispatched to South Africa, the Camper spent the first four decades of its life in warmer climes before being imported into the UK. Having been neglected for some years, the new owner decided to treat the Camper to a complete restoration to which he would dedicate the next three years of his life.

The restoration included a bare metal strip down and removal of every nut and bolt, the owner going to extreme lengths to acquire every part as either original NOS or original parts, including sourcing semaphores from the USA.

A cabinet maker by trade, he expertly restored the original wood work using a Devon interior he bought before owning the Camper, also replacing chrome work, interior trim and window frames, alongside a mechanical overhaul and exterior respray.

The only deviation from originality is the 1600 twin port engine built by Bear VW Services, Birmingham, who also rebuilt the gearbox, which allows the Camper to cruise comfortably at 65mph (104kmph).

Today the Camper presents in very good condition in its original colour combination of Beige White and Sealing Wax Red. With just 2,100 miles on the clock since restoration, the Camper has been valued at £45,000 to £55,000 by the auction house.

Simon Langsdale, classic car consignor at CCA explains: “A right hand drive, 1959 Samba is rare enough, but combine this with an authentic Devon interior, only available in that year, and you have one very special bus!

“How the owner managed to source all original parts is quite extraordinary, and this has to be one of the most original, restored Campers anyone can find anywhere, as well as a true testament to VW appreciation.”

Jawa to re-enter India with 350 OHC and 660 Vintage motorcycles

Jawa seems a step closer to re-entering the motorcycle market in India. Sources* say that Jawa could re-enter India by 2018 with the 350 OHC and 660 Vintage motorcycles.

[gallery columns="2" size="large" ids="22445,22438"]

Jawa was acquired by Mahindra & Mahindra, a major name in the four-wheeler industry last year. Mahindra plans of doing research and development of the Jawa motorcycles in India. The production will take place at Mahindra’s Pithampur plant in Madhya Pradesh and the motorcycles will be exported to other south-eastern nations.

While Jawa has been known for two-stroke engines, the company has launched two motorcycles in Europe with four-stroke units - 350 OHC and 660 Vintage.

[caption id="attachment_22446" align="aligncenter" width="827"] Jawa 350 OHC engine[/caption]

The 350 OHC is a brand new model that pays tribute to the 350 Type 634 two-stroke from the 1970s. The 350 OHC is powered by a Euro 4 compliant, 397cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine with a fuel injection system. It produces 27.7 hp at 6500 rpm and 30.6 Nm at 5000 rpm.

[caption id="attachment_22440" align="aligncenter" width="900"] 2017 Jawa Vintage 660 engine[/caption]

The 660 Vintage is not exactly a new motorcycle, but more of a street version of the 660 Sportard introduced in 2011. It was powered by a 660cc parallel twin, four-stroke, liquid-cooled engine. The 660 Vintage too produces the same power figures - 49 hp and 57.5 Nm, but has a more classic styling.

[caption id="attachment_22439" align="aligncenter" width="800"]2017 Jawa Vintage 660 2017 Jawa Vintage 660[/caption]

Detailed specifications of the motorcycle are known yet, but it does get ABS for the front disc brake. It is priced at CZK 99,930 or about INR 2.6 lakh. There is no confirmation yet whether or not Mahindra would launch the 350 OHC or the 660 Vintage in India.

If the company's announcement on bringing Jawa to India is accurate, they will be sold through Jawa dealerships across the country by 2018. If the 350 OHC is manufactured in India, it will likely be priced about the same as it is currently in the Czech Republic.
