The drive comes a day after the State Transport Minister, Divakar Raote, announced that the use of helmets would be made compulsory across the state, including Pune. Massive drive against those riding two-wheelers without wearing helmets was carried out in different parts of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.

The traffic police fined about 4,717 people and collected a total fine of Rs 4,67,900.

Many attempts were made in Pune in the past to make wearing of helmets compulsory, but the local police had to step back following strong oppose from some sections of the society.

While the announcement was made in Aurangabad on Wednesday, the traffic control branch of Pune police started a drive on Thursday to enforce helmet compulsion.
